Motherfunky came back around 3 years later and had a baby,
the Soulchild. Even though most of my mixes are in an uptempo
style, my gigs start with 2 to 3 hours of RNB, NuSoul, Hip Hop,
and downtempo eclectic soul. All of my favorite artists were getting
bootleg remixes all of a sudden. RNB and Neo Soul in an underground house style
was my dream come true. I was so in love with what house music was
doing with soulful remixes, and still in love with MAW
mixes as you can see from the tracklist. Most of these you can't find anymore
or never made it to CD. Enjoy.

Spillway

Since I quit my regular gig at Starlight Bar and Lounge I have been djing here and there, but mostly I have really gotten a chance to hang out and hear my favorite NYC djs, as well as all of the great djs that come through our fine city. This time out has reaffirmed my love of soulful dance music, be it house or otherwise. Over the past year I have had the pleasure of hearing and dancing to some of the worlds finest deejays. Some of my highlights were: Afronaught, Ben Watt, Quentin Harris, Derrek May, Miguel 'Migs', Marques Wyatt and Osunlade. Of course I enjoyed the local talent immensely too: Kevin Hedge, Little Louie Vega, Emjay, Sharee, Ubiquita, Timmy Regisford, Danny Krivit, Joe Claussell, Spinna, Rich Medina, The Freeskool/Federation boys, and everyone else that dropped a needle on the record.

This mix was an attempt to highlight my favorite sounds of the past year, a bold attempt to bridge the gap between my favorite styles and avoid a sound of sameness, and also honor those tracks that are a few years old but have never left my crate. I like my house eclectic. I love four on the floor beats, but when the nujazz and broken beats roll, they really drive me crazy too.

Another part of this summer has been travelling upstate to the Woodstock area of New York. My daughter's godmother's house is on a back road near a reservoir's spillway. The spillway is a structure designed to start a controlled flood in order to prevent a real uncontrolled flood. I began to realize the significance of this when I applied the idea as a metaphor to using music and dancing as my emotional spillway, controlling the flood.

I mixed this on 8/31/2006 on two Technics 1200 MKII's, with a Technics 1200 Battle Mixer.

Motherfunky is my definition of a funky soulful eclectic house sound, and my personal favorite mix. I mixed this the same week as brasil 5000, which was in April of 2000. It was a pre 9/11 world - sunnier, happier, and a great time for house music. Enjoy. Motherfunky has been born. As always, right click or control click (on macs) to download the file. Please don't listen in your browser.

Sometime around the year 2000 house music fell in love with Brazil. There was the seminal remix of Moloko's Sing it Back, then include the usual suspects, MAW, Kerri Chandler, Bob Sinclair, Grant Nelson, etc... And, Body and Soul's Joe Claussell remixed a song by pan-latin revivalist Snowboy called Casa Forte. Clocking in at eleven minutes and fifty seven seconds, it began innocently enough. First some drums... hot drums ... then a bassline ... a hot bassline ... once the Body and Soul dancers recognized the song, the place went wild, walls and ceilings sweated for this one. I caught the fever real bad, freaked this mix out and called it Brasil 5000. As always, right click and download or control-click on a mac. Download the file, don't listen in your browser.

Thanks to all of those who listened to side A of my mixtape, Days Like This. I promised side B and here it is. In usual b-side tradition I take it a little deeper. Side B was called Faith after the lead-off track, and goes deep into the house soul underground with some nice long tracks to stretch out the mind out with, closing with the Francois K. and Matthias Heilbronn's remix of Big Muff, another Body and Soul classic. Coming up for the next episode: the birth of the Motherfunky style, and Brasil 5000, a snapshot of the Body and Soul inspired explosion of Brazilian House. As always, please download the file to your computer instead of listening to it from the site (keeps my hosting cost down).

The year was 1999 and Body and Soul was in full swing. Motherfunky had not yet been born, I was a Thursday night resident at Wonder Bar, and I was handing this cassette out to all of my friends. The song of the year was the Masters at Work Remix of Days Like This, by Kenny Lattimore, which became the name of my tape, and the lead off track. It was a really special year for soulful house music, and this was my soul symphony.
Enjoy the Vibes. I'll post side B of the tape next. Note to listeners, please Download the mix to your computers instead of listening to it from the site over and over again.
